Brief Communication: 2014 velocity and flux for five major Greenland outlet glaciers using ImGRAFT and Landsat-8

Abstract. This study presents average velocity fields, mass flux estimates and central flowline profiles for five major Greenland outlet glaciers; Jakobshavn Isbræ, Nioghalvfjerdsbræ, Kangerdlugssuaq, Helheim and Petermann glaciers, spanning the period (August) 2013–(September) 2014. The results are produced by the feature tracking toolbox, ImGRAFT using Landsat-8, panchromatic data. The resulting velocity fields agree with the findings of existing studies. Furthermore, our results show an unprecedented speed of over 50 m day−1 at Jakobshavn Isbræ as it continues to retreat. Short summary
We use 2014 Landsat-8 imagery in combination with a newly developed feature tracking toolbox, ImGRAFT to produce velocity fields and flux for five major Greenland marine terminating glaciers: Helheim, Kangerdlugssuaq, Nioghalvfjerdsbræ, Petermann and Jakobshavn Isbræ. A major finding of the paper documents the increased velocities observed at Jakobshavn Isbræ. We measure velocities over 50m/day which exceed that of the previously recorded maximum.
